Over the underworld

ca. 2011

Picture
Artwork by Thomas Ewerhard
Over the Underworld was released on April 1, 2011. It is the band's fourth album.

Over the Underworld is an album that truly showcases Sean's creative side. It is neither a concept album nor a traditional album, per se, but more of a "second soundtrack". In the same vein as the classic Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon phenomenon that has been discussed for generations, Over the Underworld plays alongside the 2003 action-fantasy film Underworld, starring Kate Beckinsale.

The album is best experienced alongside the movie upon its first listen, as many of the songs change with the scene transitions and cues. After that, you are sure to have an appreciation for an album you will want to revisit again and again.

Physical and digital copies of Over the Underworld and other Odd Logic releases can be purchased at CDBaby here.

THE STORY OF OVER THE UNDERWORLD

Over the Underworld is a concept album different from anything Sean has ever done. It is a “sync-to-movie” project meant to be played as a new soundtrack over the original “Underworld” film starring Kate Beckinsale. Sean’s goal with this album, unlike the ambiguous and unverified nature of other similar projects (like the famous Dark Side of the Moon-Wizard of Oz sync), was to show his true intention from the start of production and therefore included proper instructions for optimal playback so people could experience it appropriately.

The project was challenging to say the least. As many of the scene changes in the film itself dictated song pace and direction, the resulting compositions became very non-traditional in terms of structure. However, thanks to progressive rock and metal being so widely accepting of such nontraditional fare, it still fits nicely into the Odd Logic progressive repertoire. Lyrically ambiguous at times, Over the Underworld tends to conjure ideas of storylines that were not even necessarily intended when written—they refer, in general, to what’s happening on screen at that exact moment and therefore, in a way, create a more legitimate sync experience than the famed aforementioned syncs. “In the end,” Sean reminisces, “It was probably the funnest album I ever did, yet very time consuming as you can imagine. I’ve often had the desire to do another and yet I’ve come to certain conclusions, being this far away from it now. The majority of folks didn’t take the time, or had trouble syncing it up...I completely understand that part of it, and yet I still remain a little disappointed that more people didn’t watch the sync.” The full list of personnel involved in this album is below.
